I’ve joined a group of mums to answer a Monday question. Today’s is:

“What type of words do you consider respectful when referring to your child?”

For us, if it’s said with good intentions, then whatever is said is fine.

We have actually learned a lot about terminology ourselves so I’ll just pop in what we’ve learned here.

I am quoting from a blog post I wrote when Coraline was almost a year old:

“We have learned the phrase to use is ‘typical babies’ when referring to babies who don’t have Down’s syndrome. We have also learned that the terminology is “a baby with Down’s syndrome” as the baby always comes first. The only abbreviation would be D.S., otherwise the full two words said together and not shortened to leave off “syndrome”.

I think it’s so important to be able to share that as we didn’t know the correct language to use until we had Coraline.
